Celtic music and the growth of the Feis movement in the Scottish highlands

I have reprinted this lengthy piece and posted it to both soc.culture.scottish and soc.culture.irish because apart from the day to day chat, there are also serious cultural issues which we share in common.

In the Scottish case, it is a strong feeling that the Gaelic culture is in danger of being lost or perverted by the tartan shortbread cake tin image, whereas the realty is that the culture can be stood against the cultures of major civilizations and can be instantly seen as equally relevent and powerful to the human condition.

The following is taken from "Celtic music and the growth of the Feis movement in the Scottish Highlands", from Western Folklore,  Fall 1998 by McKean, Thomas.
